The steel ball is 6 inches (15.2 cm) in diameter. It is hollow and can be filled to increase its weight. It is less expensive to ship empty. You can fill it with buck shot, lead, or sand.

A small bolt can be unscrewed for filling, and once the ball is filled the bolt can be tightened with a wrench. The locking washer will prevent opening of the ball without the proper tools. The standard ball and chain has one ankle shackle.
